Chapter 6

By the time he was dressed and ready to leave, Drew’s driver was already waiting in the driveway to take him into the city. Drew had telephoned his employee the previous evening to make the arrangements. He would spend the day in the office in an attempt to distance himself from Alyssa, and perhaps settle his overwrought libido. Drew had always had complete control over his carnality. He had seen how much time some of his friends spent chasing the embrace of passion, and found that it was a frivolous expenditure of resources. Instead, the few affairs in which he had participated had been rare and brief as he did not need his name on the covers of a tabloid. He did not need to charge his lawyers with the task of settling reckless paternity suits. Drew’s focus needed to be on his company, and since his father was not going to relinquish the reins on the family business any time soon, it seemed that he would have to make it on his own, his struggle a daily endeavor.

The drive into the downtown section of the city was spent meditating, praying, and asking Hera for strength to help him achieve the tasks she had issued to him. By the time that he had arrived at the tower in which his office was located, he was feeling considerably better about his current situation, and was able to spend a productive day in the office. The efficiency was entirely necessary as his absenteeism had ensured that he was far behind on a number of projects. Nearing midnight, he had just finished putting the finishing touches on one particular project when his cell phone rang. Taking a quick glance at the caller ID, he answered, “Hello, Derek.”

“How’s your little houseguest treating you?” Derek asked in greeting, rampant curiosity infusing his voice.

“None of your business,” Drew volleyed good-naturedly. “What’s up?”

“A friend can’t call another just to check on his welfare?” Drake asked in mock innocence, and then added, “Actually, I called because I’ve been doing some research.”

“Oh No.” Drew and the rest of the council had become accustomed through the years to Derek’s research, which occasionally verged on the border of meddling. The man had absolutely unfathomable resources and not all on the right side of the law. His investigations were almost always unsolicited by the members of the council, but Derek offered up the information regardless. The intelligence he provided often altered decisions made by the council members in business and in their personal lives. But since such inquiries were generally not sought, they always came as a surprise, and in Drew’s case, surprises were somewhat annoying, so he responded to Derek’s offer with an ominous, “What did you find?”

“I did some checking on your little prostitute. Seems that there is a reason she offered you her services beyond the pursuit of a little decadent excitement.
